HSI's Supported Living Arrangements (SLA)
Like the name implies, HSI's Supported Living Arrangement (SLA) Program provides a variety of living opportunities for individuals in our community who require assistance based on personal and family needs. HSI professionals are trained in the areas of behavior modification, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and autism. SLA services include:
- SLA and Intensive SLA - This program is an individualized residential living plan developed by the person and their team to facilitate independent living.
- Transition - This program is designed to help teens with disabilities transition from their educational plan to a vocational/independent living situation. Areas of focus in this program are domestic skills, community skills and vocational skills.
- Leisure & Recreation - This program provides individuals with the opportunity to attend social and/or recreational activities.
- Respite Care Program - Respite refers to short-term care given to individuals, allowing families a break from the daily caregiving routine. These individuals are invited to stay at a home with 24-hour care.
The SLA program provides as little as 10 hours of training per month to 24-hour support. Additionally, the SLA program provides specialized training for disabled children in the following areas:
- Safety and Social Skills Training
- Academic Tutoring
- Facilitate Goal Setting with Parents/Guardians
- Planning for and Participating in Leisure Activities
- Respite Services
A big challenge in supporting an individual toward independent living is in helping that person to discover what they may want. Especially if they've lived their entire life with well-meaning care takers, family members, or in institutional settings, etc., and have never had the opportunity to make choices. Perhaps there has always been someone there to decide what "would be best" without discovering and supporting a person's abilities to live as independently as possible. Remember the first time you lived on your own before you discovered that you didn't know everything?! Remember the pride and self confidence you gained as you learned to take care of yourself? That is our job in supporting people through assisted living. Teaching, advising, pointing out opportunities, choices, possible consequences (good and bad) - taking steps with a person while they learn to take as many steps as possible on their own.
